post office fiasco

my sister and i decided to walk to the post office today. she brought jackson. problem #1. he was spazoid dog for much of the way there. usually, he settles down after a couple blocks, but he kept getting tangled up with the stroller and just spazzing out in general. i had told nic i would go around 12 when connor woke up. problem #2. he woke up later than i expected and of course, trying to get him fed, nathan fed, myself fed......which never actually happened...took way longer than i thought. then i had to call nathan's gramma. not problem #3 necessarily, b/c i enjoy talking to her...but we got to chatting (since we haven't "caught up" since.....uh, forever ago....) and before you know it, it's 1 o'clock and i'm not near ready. so then i got off the phone with gramma (she's doing well, btw--getting settled into their new pad. dawn, i told her to leave the unpacking to you! HA!) so nic calls and says she's on her way to meet me. enter problem #4. i had all my bills, father's day cards, and a gift/thank you for brent and hanni ready to go. i neatly packed them in an easy to carry box and stashed them in the cargo net of my stroller. not a problem, right? wrong! not when space ball christina is involved. i get to the post office (nic was outside waiting with the kids and jay) i picked out a lovely packaging envelope and label for the gift. i went to a table to address the lovely package label. i opened my box to find the beautiful thank you note i had written with their address on it. WHAT?? OH MAN!!! i must have dropped it over there. scanning, scanning......looking under the smelly man on his cell....nope. looking under the nice old lady....no...sorry lady. rummaging through the envelopes again and again. i go outside and look on the ground. i go over to nic and the kids....i look throught the stroller. WHERE IS THIS ENVELOPE?? AAARRRGGGGHHHH! fiddlesticks. i must have left it on the kitchen table. ah, nuts.
so i go back into the post office. probably looking like someone who was up to something b/c the lady behind the counter asks, "can i help you with something, ma'am?"
"no, i've just dropped something and i can't seem to find it. thanks though."
oh, well. i'll just buy the stuff i need and mail this package later.
so i step up to the counter greeted by the man who has worked this allen park post office desk since i can remember. found out his name was keith today. not b/c he told me. he's not that friendly. i just finally read his name tag. i think i'll call him by his name from now on. just to throw him off. he must have a very dry wit. i would imagine him sitting in a dim library, smoking his pipe and reading poetry when the day is over. but that's neither here nor there.....the point is--i tried to joke with him today. mildly successfully too!
he obviously knew i had misplaced my letter, so i joked that this was an exciting adventure to the post office. *tiny smile cracked* then i asked if he could still weigh the package b/c then i could just send it out as soon as i found the letter. "sure" he said kindly. so i tried to pick up the golf balls and place them in the envelope. the packaging for the balls was ripped so they fell out. i wish i could say they fell and scattered all over the post office floor....for effect only....but they were contained in a box....lucky me. so i finally got them all ready to go and keith weighed them for me. as i was getting ready to leave he asked if i had picked up my roll of stamps i just bought. i said, "yes, i grabbed them. wouldn't want this trip to the post office to be any more exciting!" *teeny chuckle from keith* not bad for a man i've never seen more than crack a tiny smile in all my a.p. days.
so we headed home. just in time for naps. successful....almost.

The K-Miester is someone I, too, am familiar with - - - I have to take our bulk mailings in there - like 3000 newsletters...and I have to fill out paperwork to take to the front desk (I take the newsletters to the back entrance). Did you know that when you figure out the EXACT postage for 3000 newletters, you have to figure it out to 1,000ths of a cent?!?!?!? Well, I sure didn't!!!! The first time I went, K-Man was not so pleasant about the fact that I didn't know, so I proceed, as I am doing now, to make a big long explanation of how I am new at this job, and have never done this before, and the lady before me had been here for like, centuries, and automatically knew what to do, but I didn't, and I was sorry, but I didn't have an extra form with me, and could he please help me! Well, Big gray Keith actually laughed out loud (HONEST!) and told me after that to just bring him a blank form and he would help me. So every three months I go in, wait in line for Keith, and he helps me - I know he sees hundreds of customers a week, but he always remembers that I'm the one who needs help figuring the 1,000ths of a cent. Hmmm - at least I didn't lose a letter or spill my purse!!!!!

i'm with ya on the 1000ths. i used to send out pastor townes' shut-ins mailing....yowza! and i did tons of bulks for my uncle paul too. i hated that. weighing a letter and holding my breath to make sure i didn't mess up. those were my first encounters with the k-man. we should totally write him a letter! and we can all three sign it, "the spazzy gals that make your day just a little brighter!"

first of all, i love it that you said 'geeked'. what a blast from the past...i used to use that so much!! :) i say go for it. this guy needs a little spice in his life, ya know? just a little daily pick me up. we've got to get brenda on board. this could be hilarious. what a memory, huh, carol? yeah, the last thing i did before moving to asia was write a goofy letter to our favorite local postman. of course it doesn't beat.....my favorite story of all time. :)

didn't i tell you? party favors for connor's bday are shovels. his party is a few days before YOUR birthday so i'm guessing we should be there right in time for cake....or rice cakes. :)
