school daze

i am pumped for school to start! not because i am tired of the little man… although, a good routine is just the thing to get him back on track. i think if i had more kids i would be excited about school just to have my sanity back. but i really will miss my special times with connor. he's a fun kid. he thinks like his dad, but he explains his thoughts like me. so his mind is going a mile a minute, but he takes the long road to get there. i love watching him figure things out and then try to explain how he figured it out. it's quite a process filled with anecdotes and examples.

he's going to a new school this year. i am nervous about that. it's a school that houses 1st-5th grades. he had such an amazing start last year. his school was small… just kindergarten and first grade. i absolutely loved his teacher and principal. they were such a blessing. we were both very nervous about sending connor to a school system that we really couldn't prepare him for. neither one of us had been in a public school. we were all starting kindergarten together. gotta tell ya… that's a scary place! i felt like i was sacrificing my baby to the gods. sending him off to the wolves would probably have been a better example, but a sacrifice makes for better tv. he was so brave getting on the bus all by himself. (of course, he doesn't know we followed him to school! sound familiar, mother?) he stood there in his line looking ADORABLE with his little back pack on while i snapped 100 pictures and tried to plaster on my excited face. and then he just left us. standing there. alone. he was ready. i wasn't. but i didn't cry. well, i did tear up when meg lost it at the bus stop. she didn't get the whole process. i think in her mind connor was off to see the world and never return.

i would love to hear the thoughts that were going on in her little head that day:
"boy, we sure are up early today. special brefix? what's this all about? hmmmm….connor's packing food…. he's got a nice outfit on. maybe it's church day. no, we don't bring food to church. maybe he's going to bowling. no, mom makes us wear cabin clothes to bowling since it's dirty and smelly there. why are we standing out here on the corner? hey, look a big bus! wha…wait! wait a second! connor, don't get on ALONE! what are you doing?!? stop the bus! stop that bus!! NOOOOOOOO…… are they gonna make me do this at the ripe old age of 5? i'm SO outta here!"
i imagine it was like that. well, at least that's what her face told me.

i have been praying that he won't be nervous since there will be some very big kids there… and let's just say it… he's very small. :) makes the clothes buying experience less painful. since it's school of choice i will be driving him every day. i love that idea. he loved the bus, and i'm glad he got to experience it in the environment which he did. but i am SUPER excited that i get concentrated time of "how was your day?" this year. i'm also looking forward to meeting more moms this year. since i didn't drop connor at school much, it was harder than i thought to meet parents of his friends. when i went to events i tried to search for parents of the kids he was fond of playing with. this didn't work in my favor. we went to a christmas party and i told connor to see if orlando's mom was there. orlando had been the topic of many discussions since the beginning of the year. he was deemed "best buddy" within the first week of school. in fact, he was the ONLY buddy connor wanted to talk about from september to december. trying to get him to branch out was tough… anyway… orlando's mom was there! i was excited to meet her. i thought of all kinds of funny introductions about how our boys were buds. so, i asked orlando to show me which mom was his. he very politely (and in a very grown up way) took me over and introduced me.

orlando: this is my mom.
me: hello, nice to meet you. *shaking hands and exchanging smiles* i've heard so much about your family. connor really enjoys orlando. *blank stares and more smiles*
orlando: she doesn't speak much english.
me: awesome. *awkward smiles and retreat*

that's pretty much how it went with ALL of his closest friends. he had a knack for finding the spanish speaking contingent.

we've got almost all of the school supplies ready and waiting to be packed up. one last trip to the cabin should be all we need to say goodbye to our fun summer. and it has been a good one. it's gonna be a good year. new school. new friends. new routines for all of us.
