this year (because a certain stubborn baby won't come out) michael won't be on the banks of the ausable with the team, so it's just my mom and nathan (pray he doesn't strangle her!- she gets pretty intense during the marathon).
we're really hoping for a good finish this year. my dad has worked stinkin' hard the whole year and he's really improving. in fact, *ahem* he's won prize money the past two races and he's been kickin' booty of people that used to smoke him. next week, he's going to another race and he'll be meeting up with his new partner for this year's marathon. here's the big kicker~~ the guy's a french canadian and his wife (huge part of the feed crew) speaks very little english. so, in the dark in the middle of the night my mom and nathan have to find the french speaking crew and make sure they are all on the same page. oh, boy is right. they'll do it. they are the most determined feed crew ever. i never thought nathan would be so pumped about something that he had never even heard about before we got married, but his competitive nature drives him and he's planning and preparing like crazy with my mom. in fact, she didn't even call me to tell how dad did this weekend she called nathan! they're hilarious when it comes race time. they are like two peas in a pod and they work really well together.
so the countdown is up and let the race begin!

actually, i'm joking.. paddlers would never say that to each other. they're very competitive but they are extremely good sports. it's a very tight knit group. kind of amazing in this day and age.

Mom is intense!?! yeah, definately high strung...about as much as nathan!!!
Just don't have to much fun without us...I am totally jealous that you will be up there again. Mike and I might go up there when baby is really little just because we did with Ava and no one could stop by...very relaxing!
Hope your dad does well! What place did he get last year? That's really cute that Nathan and your mom have that special bonding experience. Do they actually feed the food to your dad or just toss it in? How does it work?

thanks! unfortunately, his teammate got sick last year and they had to quit. the feeders are usually standing out in the river (it's not too deep at feed spots) and they have compartments set up where they drop the food in as the racers go by. they switch out water bottles, give dry clothes if needed, hand out meds, and all in about five seconds b/c the racers don't stop. the only time they slow down is to portage a dam. but even then, they will get out of their boats run across the dam (which usually involves running down a large hill) get back in the boats and get going again. it's intense. i love it. and i don't even stay up all night with the race! i want to try and get some good video this year of a feed team at work. but it will be hard since most of the feeds take place in the middle of the night and in the morning the feeds are mostly at dams. we'll see.
What a fun thing for you all to do in the summer together.
Actually, "Go Dad go" sounds like a Dick & Jane book, which I wouldn't recommend. Luke has 4 of them, and they're so boring - I guess they're trying to teach reading through sight & repetition? ie: "Go Jane go. See Jane Run. See Jane run fast. Go Jane go. go. go." It drives you mad after a while. :)
