you just can't make this stuff up......

my life is a series of crazy events. whenever i go through a down time, i know it's really just the calm before the storm. it was a good run while it lasted.

wednesday night was nothing out of the ordinary for a parent. we were up all night... and i mean ALL NIGHT with both kids. normally, meg will wake up a couple times. she'll either be satisfied with a num-num or want some snuggle time. last night she wanted some snuggle time. she woke up around 12:30 and didn't go right back to sleep which is weird for her. 12:45 she was at it again. finally, at about 1am all was quiet.... too quiet. 2am connor wakes up screaming his pea pickin' head off. it was so loud it scared me and i bolted straight up. poor nathan woke up like the bed was on fire b/c of my little scare. connor was crying and saying something about the lights in his room. apparently, watching the lights from cars driving by at 2 am is a terrifying experience to endure. so nathan spent a little while downstairs trying to console the little man. i don't know that he ever went back to sleep b/c at about 3am he was screaming again. this time i think nathan gave up and just brought him upstairs.... this was clearly a rookie mistake. he's never been allowed to come up to our bed before. i can understand the thought process behind nathan bringing him up.... no.. wait.... i can't. call me mean. call me cold. but you've never slept next to connor. and i got the elbow to the nose to prove it. at least he apologized after he busted me in the chops. he did, too. he had a hard time falling back to sleep even with us. and then at about 3:30am meg woke up again. oh, goody. so to sum up.... that was a night of sleeplessness.

the next day was bowling. i was pretty sure the kids would be fine to go there. connor's only lingering ailment is that cough that starts when he gets too active. so if you know connor, you know that there's pretty much no off button. gramma came to get us for bowling and right as i picked up meg i smelled a stink-bomb like no other. so gramma got connor in the car and i changed meg. truth be told, i was thoroughly pleased with myself for getting up and going in time for gramma to get us. so if a stinky diaper was the only bad thing for the morning we were doing ok!

when we got to bowling i told connor to make sure he took lots of breaks from playing. he could come over and get a drink and sit at the table anytime. the next thing i saw was connor pushing breanna in the toy car running at full speed. i knew this activity plus his cough would be a volatile mix. so i went over to tell him to settle down and take a break. as we made our way to the table he started coughing and coughing and coughing. i got the water and ....... puke!!!!! so i started walking him to the bathroom.... more puke....... ok, moving faster now.... grabbed him by the armpits and scooped him up to the bathroom.... puke the whole way and even more in the bathroom. i took a few paper towels to drape over the..... um... trail we left. i went back in to get more towels and connor was still going. so i stopped to help him. i finally got him settled down and one of the ladies had come in to get a few more towels to cover up the mess for me. after that i was super thankful that nathan had no appointments yesterday morning and he was able to come get connor. he was fine, of course, but nobody wants a kid that just puked to stick around and possibly let 'er fly again.

the next thing that happened made me pull up the hood on my sweatshirt. you are all aware of my gramma. she's quite a hoot. full of life and energy. not afraid of anything or what anyone thinks. somehow... i have no idea... one of the ladies' bowling balls got stopped in the gutter halfway down the lane. being law abiding citizens they called the service desk to request a worker to come remedy the problem. they patiently waited. and waited. and waited. it was getting old. we joked about different ways to get the ball out. "throw another one down the gutter...hahaha!" "somebody walk down there... hahaha!" then i looked up to find... yes... my 70 year old grandmother inching her way down the lane straddling the gutters. she got all the way down there and started to pick up the ball.... instead of just rolling it or kicking it the rest of the way down. yeah, it looked a little 'iffy' for a while and i didn't know if gramma would make it back unscathed. and of course, like a bolt of lightning the manager came running over to help her back.

while i was in the bathroom cleaning my puke-ball boy, apparently, my name was called over the loudspeaker. after connor got picked up i headed over there to find out that i had won a bowler of the week prize for being 25 over my average. i won a free dinner at texas roadhouse. pretty cool, huh?

i thought the events of the day were going to settle down once we got home. clearly, i haven't learned my lesson. we had a normal dinner. worked out. and decided to go use nathan's starbucks gift card and get a coffee before the office started. connor had been really good all day so i thought i'd let him get a popcorn while we walked around. i am a stupid stupid person. i know that he has a cough. i know that the little kernels get stuck in his throat when he's been sick and it makes him cough. i know when that happens he starts to gag and .... yeah.... puke. thankfully, i had a napkin and he didn't cough that much. so, yeah i did the mom reflex. i stuck my hand out so it wouldn't get everywhere. nathan was amazed by this reaction. but you moms out there know that sometimes when you see the puke face starting, you grab whatever is near and stick it under the kid's mouth. well, this time i had napkins... and my hand. connor was fine so i told him no more popcorn and we floated through the store. we found a puzzle and a dvd on clearance, so nathan and i came home, got the kids in bed and watched some tv while we worked the puzzle. connor enjoyed his new dvd...word world 1/2 price... pretty cool.

he slept fine last night. meg was normal. 2 times up for her.

so here are some randoms from lately and beyond.

Unbelievable. You certainly have an exciting life. And you'll have LOTS of stories to retell your kiddos when they get older. :) Get some rest, super-puke-catching-mama!

Hey Nate...are those eight pound weights you got there? GT

hey grant---

you're gonna get awfully hungry out on that river all by yourself. or maybe i'll just stand out there with a 5 lb. weight every time you pass. but then again, adding weight to a tug boat really doesn't make much of a difference.

dad--- i was forced to write the cheese that ended the above paragraph. nathan couldn't type b/c he was peeing his pants laughing at how funny he thinks he is.

Christina - mom's certainly do get good at recognizing the puke face and doing the "armpit hold puke run", I've done this many times...the last place to get baptized was my mother in laws bedroom quilt...

SEE....... this is kind of stuff we miss the most!!! Watching you in action is absolutely adorable, even though to you it may be a rough time, we so enjoy the "after the story story" You are a great writer and we wait to see that first book published soon. You will certainly have a 'sequel'
Love ya,

julie- i have a feeling your stories are going to be just as crazy as mine.... mom stories are even better than teacher stories. the combination of the two can be hilarious. ;)

beth- oh, yes. you know the run well. haha!

momma che- if you had been in target with us we both would have peed our pants laughing. it was that kind of night. the best! :)
