connor funnies and feel things

today i found a notepad with some old funnies that connor had said and i just never got around to putting them in here.

one day he woke up from his nap crying and said, "mommy, my blankie's broken!"

after dinner one evening, connor and nathan were watching hockey, and nathan told connor they would play hockey together someday. when it was time to read his Bible story that night, connor stopped...looked up... and said in all seriousness, "Jesus watches all the time." then a short contemplative pause, and then, "does Jesus play hockey?" not knowing exactly how to respond to a 2-yr-old asking that type of question i attempted to regain some sort of reverence. i talked a lot about how Jesus is God and He does indeed always watch us. thinking i had successfully answered his question and feeling quite proud of my efforts i was unprepared for this: "does Jesus play golf?"

we were at the lab getting some annoying preggo blood work done and a man and his wife entered. connor looked to me and asked, "is that papa?" the man doesn't remotely resemble my papa so i told him, "no that's not papa, honey." stunned at this unacceptable answer, connor double checks...looks back to me puzzled and asks, "then who is it?"

connor frequently says these phrases:

enters kitchen and asks, "what's cookin' mama?"

"hey, daddy-o!"

"ouchie va vava!" *this one is courtesy of my uncle and cousin david. i said it one day b/c i remembered little david saying it all the time. connor loved it and still uses it.

when he's playing with his toy phone, "i'm textin', mama."

tonight he was talking to everyone he knows on his toy phone and he called dillon:
"hey, dillon. you wrestling? ok. sweet! you wrestling the other boys? good grief! ok, see ya."
good grief??? where did he get that???

he has started realizing that when he's in big trouble i whip out his full name. so the other morning he was desperately trying to get nathan's attention, and when he failed after several attempts he yelled, "daddy 'bangeline sherf!" you may remember that ava's middle name is evangeline. i guess he just thinks his name is connor ace and everyone else is an "evangeline sherf". he whipped it out me tonight. i was washing dishes and i hear, "mommy! MOMMY! mommy 'bangeline sherf i need some help please!" at least he said please, right?

ok, so now the story of the "feel thing". when nathan was little he used to rub the corner of his pillow to shreds. he started taking the tops of q-tips and peeling them off, he'd roll them together to make a cottony conglomeration of fluff. this was called his feel thing. he still does it to this day. in fact, when we were dating he sat me down to tell me about the feel things and he was so seriously nervous i thought he was breaking up with me. turns out he was just nervous that i'd think he was a really weird guy b/c he had the same habit for 20 years. you'd be amazed at how many feel things i find around the house. once they're rolled together they stay pretty well, but some pieces always fall off. so when connor started specifically asking for the characters on his blankets (my mother informed me that they are called appliques) i knew this was the beginning of the feel thing being genetically transposed to my son. then one day connor wanted to come sit on daddy's lap at the computer and he reached for one of the feel things and started rolling it around in his fingers. unbelievable.

hmmm? what's this?

oh, yeah, i'll be keeping this little gem. dad, why didn't you let me in on this fun thing sooner?

nathan took connor upstairs after a very long day to give me a break, and when i got up there this is what i found. i could hear connor saying, "only for boys, right dad?" apparently, it was a secret clubhouse for the boys only.
it's funny to see this picture. nathan rearranged our bedroom this past weekend and it looks totally different... and much cleaner! :~)

they were watching the red wings game.

he really loves watching sports on tv. it's amazing how fast interests are shaped.

i was allowed to come in, so obviously the "no girls allowed" rule can be smudged occasionally.

What cute stories! I am pretty sure moms don't count as "girls" :-) And you are SO right about interests forming early. Aaron's new fave word is "Football" and he will say it for 20 minutes straight, no lie. I didn't really think he knew what it was (he is only 17 months) until Sunday when we were watching the Packers and Aaron ran right up to the TV and yelled "FOOTBALL! YAAAAAYYYYY!" What in the WORLD? We don't even watch very often...

You got the 'feel thing' story correct. And yes, it had been going on for years. I just can't imagine two men and 'feel things' in every pocket. (does it remind you of that scene in Maid in Manhattan when the congressman tells the boy that having a paper clip in his pocket takes all the nervous energy away from him?) Just a thought.
