it was a great morning....not too cold, the sun was bright, great for a deer drive. nathan and my dad met up with my uncles--bob and arnie. they got set and headed out into the woods. they were separate, but still had radios to communicate. nathan hears, BOOM BOOM! then my dad comes on the radio, "hey, i just shot at a 6 point buck. man! i think i missed." minutes later, a buck walks in front of nathan and slows down. so he raises his gun, and puts the buck in his sights, flips off the safety, holds his breath and gets ready to fire.......... the buck drops. hmmm. so he gets on the radio. "hey, grant.....i think your shot was better than you think. your buck just dropped dead in front of me."
a few minutes later.....
BOOM BOOM! arnie comes on the radio. "i just shot at a doe!!" the doe runs right in front of nathan, right next to my dad's deer. so nathan gets his gun ready again.......plop! she drops in his sights. so nathan blows on the barrel of his gun and thinks, "hm. pretty good shootin'."
i think he's got laser vision, and just hasn't told us yet.
arnie split the doe up between mike & nic & us. so it's venison tonight! i don't have to buy roasts for a while. which is always nice.
we had dinner at gramma tally's yesterday. every time we go there, the "grown up" table is always raving about gramma's roast. i was sitting there and thought, "i don't remember ever having gramma's roast. i'll try some today and see what the buzz is." ok, now gramma's fries are legendary, her broccoli is superb, mac & cheese is to die for......roast is .....hamina hamina hamina......if you're not good at reading sound effects that simply means, "yowza! that's so good i'm unable to speak!". i think it melted in my mouth...seriously. i have to say, i was really craving a gramma wheeler roast and this was quite a delight. they both rank way up there. i'm told gramma wheeler sometimes gets her meat from bob jones....which is why her roast is jokingly referred to as "holy cow". delish though. absolutely falls apart when you touch it with a fork. connor enjoyed his time at the kids table with austin overseeing his food consumption. he made sure that connor got a pickle (they both have quite an affinity for those green nuggets of sweetness.) and he gave him a jello, which gave me time to enjoy an entire meal. maybe i should have austin over for dinner sometime. :)
after that, it was home for naps and study. nathan's getting ready to take his test again. i decided to hit the stores by my house...just to kill some time. it was so relaxing. i strolled through, browsing all the goodies that i might buy during after christmas sales. and everyone around me was scurrying with that "if i don't find a gift for aunt sue soon i'm going to go postal" look on their face. i just tried to spread some christmas cheer with my slow, out of their way cart and "no, i insist, after you" attitude. that seems to help those procrastinators lose some of that edge. it's quite liberating knowing that i don't HAVE to go out shopping. pressure's off. i feel like bursting into song......oh, there's no place like home for the holidays!
then nathan ran out to get something for me. and as usual he wanted me to open it right away. but i insisted that we wait. we said we were going to do our family christmas this friday night. but now, i am wanting to do it tonight! i can't wait. nathan's going to love his gifts. we did give in and open our stockings last night. partly b/c mine didn't really fit in my stocking. nathan got me some slippers (red with little reindeer). they're cute, and they really keep my toes warm which has been an impossibility during winters past.
part of my gift he said is a "famiy present". all i know is....he's been selling on ebay like crazy to be able to buy something. that should be exciting.
ok, pictures for the non-readers.

kind of fuzzy b/c i was FREEZING. the breeze off the water was making me shiver quite a bit. too bad b/c this is the best smile of the little man.

Apparently, I live a very sheltered life. I just had my first venison last week. Well, a couple years ago, I had venison jerky, but I was told that it didn't count as "real" venison. Whatever. All I know is that I ate Bambi and it was a lot tougher than I thought it'd be. I was imagining the texture would be like chicken. Doesn't all non-beef meat taste like chicken?
nah, not sheltered. it's just a "hunter" thing. and venison jerky totally counts.
Nice pictures Christina - and as always, your telling of the story makes me laugh!
Ha ha - We can tell Susan didn't go to NBBC - - - I used to feel sad about hunting too, until a ding dong deer hit my car one day. (Notice I said he hit ME, I did NOT hit him. I was at a stop sign for cryin' out loud.) Well, one large insurance deductible later, I no longer had ANY qualms about thinning out the deer population. Good grief - they're EVERYwhere up there!!!!!
