turkey 101

i've just returned from my "cooking with susie" class. nicole is having a bunch of people over for dinner and she's had this turkey forever (mike's gift last year from ups) so she wanted to make it but she didn't know how exactly. so she called up gramma sanders, the queen of thanksgiving deliciousness. see, we have great cooks in our family. my mom can tell you what to substitute for ANYTHING. she can just make things up like it's nothing. my dad is a phenomenal cook b/c he puts mushrooms and garlic on everything. gramma tally makes waffles, fries, chicken, mac and cheese to die for, broccoli that will melt in your mouth....oh my word i'm hungry again!!! and gramma sanders' crowning achievement is her thanksgiving feast.....second only to her baking ability which is amazing. so it would make sense that i call upon these people when i have a hankerin' for something that is in my memory banks.

the only problem is, when you call gramma sanders you get years of experience, not a recipe card. she uses terms like "gitcha a handful" instead of "use 1 cup", and "oh, like about that much *using her index finger as a measuring stick*" instead of "two tbs." so you really never know. well, i've messed up enough recipes trying to duplicate her cooking so finally i told her i wasn't going to try anymore. i was just going to bring over the ingredients, throw them on her counter and say, "show me". well, that's pretty much what nicole did.

it was great. we video documented the whole thing. at one point we missed some salting and nicole says (on video) "ok, here's what we missed. gramma shook the salt over the water like this for about this long.......get that?" so precise! :)

then while we were waiting for some eggs to boil, the kids were crawling through nicole's pantry cupboards like it was a tunnel. they were hilarious.

well, the good news is.....nathan might be driving home tonight!! then he'll get in around 1am instead of noon tomorrow. yahoo!!

so here are some pics of the festivities.

ok, gramma i'm ready to learn!

here nicole pretends to get the tin foil ready.

and here's what really happened.....gramma did most of it. you'd think as good as her turkey tastes it would be a complex process. nope. salt, butter, a little bit of lovin' and yowza that's one good bird. when she finished buttering it we both said, "ok what next?" gramma's answer, "well, now you've got to put it in the oven." we were dumbfounded. and shocked that our entire family doesn't look like a bunch of sumos.

watch the birdie!!

into the oven for a few hours......and it will come out smelling delightful

yes, this pic is staged, but it really did happen. spazzy mcgee was getting out the eggs and caught them just in time.

mom, can we come down in the kitchen now? we ate all the goldfish and ava keeps telling me 'no'.
this is where connor was looking down the steps to see what was going on.

this tunnel is sweet!

beep, beep, ava!

peek-a-boo

hi mom!

gotta love those cheekies

traffic jam

carol, this one's for you.....yesterday i raked this yard clean. this morning it looked like this. for the love. but i'd rather do it more than once and have an easier job each time.

you forgot to add that super-Nicole said "yes" to her sister-in-law's last-minute request to watch 2 out of 3 of her almost-1-year-olds who wanted to be held, non-stop I am told, by Auntie Nic. though i only heard a second-hand retelling of the events, it sounds like nicole was juggling 2 (additional) kids, a turkey, those eggs, and a partridge in a pear tree!!

wow! when i talked to her after 2/3 left she sounded totally together and not flustered. i would have been freaking out! :)

Christina,
That is how my family spells grandma, too! And that is exactly how my gramma cooks--I've been trying to get her to nail down some specifics on a few family fav recipes and write them down, maybe some day! Your blog made me very hungry!

it just makes sense, ya know? if i type or write 'grandma' it just looks funny b/c i don't say it like that. too funny! do you guys write 'grampa' too? :)

How much butter was on that turkey? I have to make one too leftover from my Christmas "bonus" from work. I usually use a bag, but if foil works that sounds good too.

I jigged for you today, it dropped down to 65 and you could see all the winter parka's out. these people REALLY are wimpy about weather. Hal and I took a walk by the ocean today with sweatshirts on...SO fun.We are due to swing back up to 80 the rest of the week. We "hit a cold front" according to Hal Sillers.
