seriously???

the past few days have been full of "seriously?" moments. you know, those times in life where you just have no words. you're speechless, stunned, not sure how it all happened and not sure where your brain has been hiding out. or it could be those moments that just make you say, "that's life." the ones where you just have to suck it up and move on. but in my life these moments just make me laugh... maybe it's just me, maybe it's just the fact that it happens to me, who knows.... i just crack up.

uncle paul gave us some of his caribou meat. i'm betting aunt elaine made him clean out the freezer b/c there was a TON of meat. hey, i don't mind... free meat is free meat. some of it was ground up which i was pumped about b/c i was running really low on ground beef and i didn't want to get anymore just yet. so last night i got the great idea to make caribou lasagna. or as i also like to think of it-- rudolph lasagna. b/c as you know caribou and reindeer are one in the same. haha! leave it to a hunter's kid to ruin bambi AND rudolph!! i love it.

i was really on top of things yesterday, so i was browning the meat by lunch time. i knew that i wanted to have it made up and ready to pop in the oven so i wouldn't feel super rushed on a church night. i was feeling energetic, happy, sniffing the crisp air of fall, and planning a fun game of soccer with connor after naptime. then i got out my lasagna noodles. BUGS!!!!! bugs were in my pasta. crud. no biggie. i have another box in the back of the pantry. what??? more bugs?? hmmm.... if there are bugs in THESE pasta boxes, i wonder what's going on in THESE pasta boxes. see, i store my pasta in the very back on the bottom shelf.... well, i USED to store it there. and i USED to leave it in the boxes. well, there are a lot of things i USED to do. when i was with the howells in africa i USED to be able to eat the bread even if the bugs had sneaked into the flour and i hadn't noticed them until after i baked the rolls. somehow living in a supposedly clean and western society has ruined my frontier spirit. b/c i was freaked out and grossed out big time. thankfully, i didn't lose too much of the contents of my pantry. that would've really ticked me off. but now, dinner was in peril. i had to get noodles, but connor HAD to take a nap b/c it was getting later and later. nathan was going to let me use the car, but i knew i wouldn't have time. i had to wait until he went to practice. thankfully, around that time gramma tally was in the area, so she watched connor so i could go quickly. i hit the dollar store to get some storage containers for my pasta, and then ran to krogers where amazingly lasagna noodles were on sale. of course, i had to use that stupid card. you know, the one that they force you to use if you want the sale price. communists. they're just storing information about you until the fbi needs it, you know. i know it doesn't seem like it, but one day a special task force will be knocking at your door asking why you purchased lighter fluid and baby diapers on the same day. i'm not a fan of krogers, can you tell?

so after i got the entire pantry scrubbed and reorganized, i could finally cook dinner. the rudolph was cooking nicely, but the super cheesy top was browning too fast for my liking. no problem i'll just throw some tin foil on top. i ripped off a square of foil, set it on the counter and pulled rudolph out of the oven. jovially, i sniffed the delicacy and thought, "i can hardly wait for dinner!" see, i love lasagna, but i've only made it twice in my life. the first time was a complete disaster resulting in a trip to mcdonalds for dinner. so not only was i excited that i had made it with free meat, i was also pumped to eat it. i turned around to the counter and something looked weird. didn't i have some coupons sitting there? i know i did. "connor, did you take mommy's coupons?" that's weird. i wonder where they could've gone? are ya with me so far? yep. when it was time for dinner i pulled the lasagna out and found that the cheese had become one with the foil. i slowly started peeling the foil back, and as i'm scraping i started to notice a piece of paper.... what in the world??? 50 cents off your next purchase of a betty crocker boxed potato..... or .... a little fresh ink for your lasagna. so THAT'S where my coupons went. apparently, they got picked up with the foil and plopped right on top of the lasagna. it tasted fine.... we just stayed away from that corner.

to top it all off, i bowled a 69 today. i figured since i bragged about my 174 i should be honest about stinkin' it up today. right after i finished that game, my gramma came over to tell me she had just finished with a 140. can life get any more ironic? i submit that it cannot!

so as we're bowling my parter, lora, says, "boy, i hope those weren't termites." you better believe i did some googling when we got home. i found out they are dermestid pantry beetles. they have bunches of different names. i had the larvae of the pantry sort. i'm just glad they're not termites. yikes! they can eat my pasta, but my house.... no, thank you.

who needs hair gel when mom gives me waffles with syrup?

Hilarious! We had those too. I ended up buying spectricide spray from Target and spraying the baseboards in the kitchen and the window sills and patio door track with it and haven't had a problem since. They loved flour at our house - very frustrating to have to empty out every boxed product in our pantry and put it in tupperware - ahhh!

I just love the Rudolph story!! Free meat and your lasagna came out OK!! You're batting 1,000. I really do agree that you should be writing a book, just of these kind of days in the life of a stay at home wife and Mom. It would truly be a best seller and humorous too. Love Connor's cheesy smiles.
Love,

Sorry to hear about the bugs but I'm glad I'm not the only one - I have bagged, thrown out, moved cupboards and I buy new stuff from the store and it still has bugs in it! Now I thought they wre cockroaches so thanks for clearing that up for me. This week I opended my bread flour to make homemade pizza (sealed in one of those meatl popcorn tins) bugs everywhere! YUCK its like I have to have two meal plans for everynight - it has been bad!

Number 1: You can call and ask me for bugless noodles.
Number 2: if you are ever at kroger and you want to get the discount you can enter your phone number if you 'forgot' your card. I just enter our old cicotte phone number...I'm pretty sure its not in our name anymore and the price is right

Seems like you ought to be able to make a little money from the sale of this story!! I definitely understand those kind of days - glad it all worked out in the end!

Oh, and about Kroger? They might be communists, but I've scored THREE $3 off Luvs printout coupons just for scanning the card the last 3 times I have gone - and for that, well, that helps soften the blow...I guess I'm an easy sellout. :-) Nevermind that I use the coupons at other stores!

yikes! bugs in a sealed tin?? bummer. my gramma and i were joking about baking them into things....hey, it's protein. :) haha!

i'm such a spaz! i didn't even think of asking if you had some noodles. what a dumbo. one time i called that number just for kicks... it's some fire station or homeless shelter now. i can't remember which. yeah, like i'd whip out my real phone number at our krogers....

jenny-
$3 off?? wow... good score. i always get coupons for weird things like tv dinners or the automatic shower cleaner. stuff i'd never buy. or a useless-in-my-mind coupon like 50 cents off two creamers. SO not worth walking into our kroger again. so, you used them somewhere else, huh? kudos. :)

Yucky pantry bugs. At least they weren't cockroaches which our neighbors love to share with us!! (we get out the vacuum for those "little" boogers)
As for grocery stores, guess all of ours are communistic. Not one doesn't require a card. I have 'em all on my keychain!

yeah, I guess you might have the girl ask for your number but I have had to just type it into the credit card pad. that is probably why you said you would have trouble thinking of one on the spot. I always do the self checkout and the smelvidalish girl mumbles out, "enter you number in the pad!" Like I am the stupidest person on the face of the earth.
