the tree in my parents backyard finally crashed into the river!! it had always leaned over the river...just b/c it had grown that way. and my dad's next door neighbor kept telling him, "oh, grant ya, gotta get that tree down." well, my parents didn't want to take the tree down, but they knew they should do some major topping since it was just so huge. sometime this past year, they had someone come out and look at it. apparently, he told them he could do the job when the river froze....well, this year, the river didn't freeze well enough. so no soup.
so here's the timeline. last friday my parentals went up north to hit the river with garth. the guys were going to practice paddling and then drive home saturday night.
saturday night, nic calls and says, "hey, let's take a pizza out to mom and dad's." great idea! i had just made nathan's strawberry birthday pie. so we headed out to meet them.
we got there before mike and nicole, but we didn't have a key so we just sat in the car for a few. then when they got there we all went in the house......i got in after nic and all i saw was her looking out the window (the whole back wall is mostly window) and then turning with her hands over her mouth....speechless! THE BOAT WAS UNDER THE TREE!!!!
nathan went into what we affectionately refer to as rescue mode. he went outside and called my dad. so nathan's on the phone telling my dad what we can see and all i hear is him saying, "no. not the branches.....THE TREE! the whole tree fell!"
so i ran back inside to check on the kids....they were sitting in the middle of the living room floor. ava was patting connor's face and he was hysterically laughing....it was SO cute!
then as i got outside again i heard the chainsaw. then next thing i knew nathan was crawling over limbs and the broken canopy of the boat--amazingly the only thing damaged.
so mike was holding limbs, nicole was holding the rope to keep the boat as steady as possible, and nathan was ripping through some huge branches. it didn't take too long to get the boat out from under the tree b/c only a few big limbs were actually touching the boat.

ptl though that no one was hurt...either while the tree fell, or when they were "freeing willy" as mike described it.
this is the majority of the tree....this picture doesn't even do it justice. the tree is huge...much of it was under water and only a few branches were on the boat...which you can't even see b/c the camera couldn't fit the whole scene...amazing
jackson wanted to help....but he kept getting in the way...and falling in the water

everyone laughed at me b/c they said this was a 'papa' thing to do...i used my shoe as a scale to show how far the roots were lifted away from the seawall when the tree fell....i thought it was a good idea! :)

Okay, HUGE news is "i'm pregnant" or "we're moving" or "connor's walking". Huge news is not "tree fell down". I mean, I know it was a big deal and all, but huge news?
i was waiting for that....:) i thought twice about the title, but then i thought, 'nah...no one would guess that.' oh, well! i guess i was thinking of the size of the tree...that's where ginormous came from.
